Rainy Day Activities

You can plan the perfect vacation - but you can only predict the weather but so far.  It's always a good idea to have a back-up plan!  Below you will find a list of suggested "rainy day" activities and other ideas for indoors, out of the weather fun. 

Some of the listed places are (for the most part) outdoor attractions, but if you come across a patch of rain or a brief thunderstorm, these hints will help you make the most of your trip! 


• Busch Gardens Williamsburg
True, most rides and activities are outdoors - however, if by chance you do get some rain on your day trip to the park, don't worry!  Use this time to see one of the many main stage shows.  Grab a bite to eat AND see a show at Das Festhaus. 

• Colonial Williamsburg Museums
It's a great outdoor museum, but come rain, be sure to visit the indoor museums at Colonial Williamsburg - Basset Hall, the Williamsburg home of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum; and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum

• Cooke's Christmas Gifts & Collectibles
The collector's paradise!  Inside this wonderful Williamsburg gem, you'll find home decor for all seasons.  Spring, autumn and of course a winter wonderland of gifts, ornaments, decorations and more!  Forget the rain, you're going to wish it was snowing! 

• Dean Shostak's Crystal Concert
Rained out in the Historic Area?  Head over to the Kimball Theater in Merchants Square and see Dean Shostak's Crystal Concert.  The show combines music and history into one amazing and beautiful experience.

• Dolls of Diane
A great way to spend a rainy morning or afternoon.  Explore Diane's amazing collection, featuring famous personality dolls, dolls from around the globe, doll furnishings and accessories and more!

• The Natalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium
If rain interrupt your trip to Historic Jamestowne and its natural outdoor beauty, head into the Archaearium which features an extraordinary display of genuine artifacts from the site's archeological excavation.   

• Jamestown Settlement
Jamestown Settlement is famous for its remarkable outdoor exhibits, including its re-created Powhatan Indian Village and ship replicas - but should you encounter a little bad weather, you must check out the impressive indoor museum.  This addition to the Settlement is quite remarkble and explores the three cultures that converged at Jamestown - the Powhatan Indians, the English settlers and the Africans.

• Mariners' Museum
Nautical fun and excitement - indoors!  Immerse yourself in the Age of Exploration while studying and examining navigational instruments, model ships and more.  Be sure to check out the impressive USS Monitor Center which explores everything behind the Civil War ironclad ship!

• Muscarelle Museum of Art
Located at the College of William and Mary, this fine arts museum (the only in the Historic Triangle) is a great way experience, rain or shine.  The museum's permanent collection includes English and American portraits, Japanese prints, African art, Asian ceramics and more!  Check the museum's website for current and future traveling exhibitions.   

• Prime Outlets at Williamsburg
Okay, so it is an outdoor strip mall, but at least all of the stores are indoors!  Featuring well over a hundred of the hottest brands, including J. Crew, Nine West, Polo Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Coach and more. 

• Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum & 4-D Theater
The perfect rainy day activity!  This museum keeps any visitor entertained and fascinated with its 11 outrageous galleries!  Oddball exhibits include dinosaur eggs, a shrunken head and so much more. 

• Riverwalk Landing
Yes, the Riverwalk Landing walkways are outdoors and pictureque, nestled along the York River - - HOWEVER, the shops and restaurants are indoors, providing a delightful shelter from those patches of rain or brief thunderstorms.

• Williamsburg Outlet Mall
Williamsburg's very own indoor outlet mall!  Spend your rainy day browsing the stores, including Vanity Fair and Lee/Wrangler.

• The Virginia Living Museum
When it's raining, take the time to visit with the animals of the region.  With so many different exhibits, you'll think you're outside on a mountain, inside a forest or lurking in a swamp! It's great rainy day fun without feeling like you're indoors!

• Yankee Candle
Set in the backdrop of a quaint small town, this amazing collection of stores is all indoors!  In addition to the vast selection of candles, Yankee Candle is the perfect place to find gourmet foods, gift items and Christmas collectibles!

• Yorktown Victory Center
If you hit a patch of rain, take this time to head indoors to explore the Yorktown Victory Center's amazing galleries - including a Declaration of Independence Gallery, Witness to Revolution Gallery and Converging at Yorktown Gallery.  Also check out A Time for Revlution, a film centered around an encampment during night of the Siege at Yorktown.
