How and when was Whitley’s founded?

Whitley’s recently celebrated its 30th anniversary last year as a small family owned business. Whitley’s is currently owned by Todd Smith. His father and brother opened the door to Whitley’s in 1986. Their retail store was located off Route 17 with only one small batch cooker and three employees slow roasting peanuts in the back of the store. That location still stands as a retail store today. Soon after, they opened up a second retail store in Williamsburg, VA and a new production facility in Hayes, VA.

How has Whitley’s stayed involved in the Williamsburg community over the years?

In 2015, Whitley’s introduced their "We're Giving Back" program, a partnership with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund in support of our U.S. armed forces. A portion of the proceeds from their military line of peanut tins goes
to supporting military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injury and psychological health conditions. In addition, Whitley’s has partnered with many local organizations, including  the Hospice House of Williamsburg, William and Mary Athletics and Bread For Life Pantry. Whitley’s attends wine and beer festivals locally and enjoys having a float in the Williamsburg Christmas parade annually.

What is it about your products that makes Whitley’s Peanuts a must-visit spot for families visiting the area?

We put a lot a care and attention into our products. Our “Home-Cooked” Virginia peanuts are still slow roasted the old fashioned way. All of our chocolatey peanut confections are handmade. Every cluster is dipped one by one and is not mass produced. Our stores have a variety of products that include Virginia peanuts, other nut varieties, nut mixes and confections. All of our stores allow customers to sample of products so they have the opportunity to try our products before they make a purchase.

Anything additional you would like to highlight?

For thirty years and millions of peanuts later, Whitley’s Peanut Factory has become a local staple that has perfected “Home-Cooked” roasted Virginia peanuts and peanut confections. Todd Smith, who is now President, continues his family’s legacy of roasting Virginia peanuts to golden perfection.
