Williamsburg Choral Guild Summer Sings - Anthem Treasures & Soulful Spirituals
$10
Location: Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists
Event Website

Conducted by Rebecca Davy, Director of Music and organist at Bruton Parish Church. Music has long played a role in the church. Anthems that set texts from the Bible and Spirituals handed down from the early slave era are some of the most powerful expressions of faith, uniting people in common prayer wherever they gather for worship. The program includes a number of musical gems from the Renaissance to the present, including “Ain-a That Good News" (Dawson) and “Cantique de Jean Racine” (Fauré), among many others. Summer Sings is a program sponsored by the Williamsburg Choral Guild that features three different sing-alongs of great choral masterpieces, each with a guest conductor, soloists and piano accompaniment. These consecutive Wednesday evening events in June start at 7:00 p.m. with registration and announcements, and singing begins at 7:30. All programs take place at Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists at 3051 Ironbound Road, between Route 5 and Jamestown Road. The Guild welcomes singers of all abilities as well as those who just want to listen. Sight-reading familiarity is a plus, but a love of community music-making is the only requirement for would-be songsters and choral music fans.

American Furniture: From Virginia to Vermont
Location: DeWitt Wallace Museum
Event Website

This exhibition in the Elizabeth Ridgely and Miodrag Blagojevich Gallery highlights pieces from three regions: Eastern Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New England. While early furniture forms and styles from these areas were similar during the late 17th through the early 19th centuries, the interpretation and the popularity of designs varied due to differences in local economies, trade settlement patterns, and the religious and cultural backgrounds of the inhabitants. A section on painted furniture further demonstrates regional styles and decorative influences.
