Helping the Homeless and "Precariously Housed in Greater Williamsburg

The Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance's LEAD Historic Triangle Class of 2013 created Hands Together Historic Triangle to serve the homeless and precariously housed in the Historic Triangle. The event on March 4th, 2013 at the Quarterpath Recreation Center in Williamsburg was a huge success! We served more than 200 guests and recruited nearly 400 volunteers the day of the event. Guests received numerous services including medical, vision and dental checks, access to social services and non-profit agencies, services such as haircuts, bike repairs, notary. Donations shared with guests included food, clothing, cleaning supplies and personal grooming items.

Hands Together achieved the goals of creating a one-day, one-stop access to resources available in the community to help our neighbors in need. We increase awareness to build a community of compassion and built a foundation for the event to continue next year, supported by Crosswalk Church, with volunteers from across the community.

  • More than 400 volunteers were recruited by the LHT class, including providers.

  • Volunteer hours for the event total more than 2,000 hours, without adding in the work of the class.

  • 28 sponsors provided financial donations, goods/services or in-kind donations.

  • Donations, including cash and in-kind, total nearly $50,000.

We believe it was a transformative day for all involved: the guests, the volunteers, the providers, the class and the community.
