| Christmas in Williamsburg 2011 | |||||
The month of December was a flurry of activity for the Alliance with the theme of "Christmas in Williamsburg 2011". From the annual Community Christmas Parade to a substantially expanded holiday marketing campaign there was much to celebrate. Early data from area attractions reflects strong growth in visitation over 2010 and work is already underway to grow all of these results for 2012. Smith Travel Reports for December 2011 report a 31% increase in demand for hotel rooms in the Historic Triangle compared to December of 2010. Visits to the ChristmasInWilliamsburg.com website grew by more than 100% over the same period as well. Area attractions reported visitation increases for December as high as 61%. Growth in Washington, DC, Baltimore, Hampton Roads and Richmond, the markets targeted with the television campaign, reported increases of up to 153% in attraction visits over 2010 results. While tax reports will reveal more about the actual impact of the holiday promotion, these early results speak well for the cooperative partnership between the Alliance, James City County, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. Work is underway to continue to build upon the success of the 2011 Christmas in Williamsburg campaign. The Alliance will work to continue the relationship with our partners while seeking additional partners and investment to leverage the 2011 success. DEVISE A BACKUP PLAN FOR YOUR BUSINESS DATAEveryone knows that backing up computer files is important, and most of us will face a computer crisis of some type sooner or later. But simple laziness or perhaps a lack of information and belief that backups are too costly or time-consuming cause business owners to put it off, and that can have disastrous consequences. Damaged or lost data files have cost many small or home-based business weeks, months or even years of work. It can happen in an instant for many reasons. Suddenly your hard drive starts making loud, grinding noises and stops working. Your laptop might be stolen or maybe you simply push a wrong button. Computer viruses also can make files vanish. There are several ways to back up your business files. One simple method is to copy or "burn" your files to CD’s. This works if you don’t have large amounts of data to protect. You also can keep a secondary computer or external hard drive around to serve as your backup center. It helps to have a specific plan in place to protect your files. First, decide which files are critical to keeping your business operating. Choose a backup method and perform a full backup at least once a week. Backup any critical data daily to a removable device. To make sure the backup systems really work, test your backup files at least quarterly. Keep a full backup on-site for convenience, but be sure to store one set far enough away so a disaster won’t strike both locations. SCORE answers your business questions for free.
