411 Business Careers Post

Please Note: The December 19 meeting at the Muscarelle Museum of Art has been cancelled. This meeting will be rescheduled for February. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be January 23 with Blue Talon. More details coming soon.

The program offers local 9th-12th grade students an opportunity to explore and interact with leaders of various types of businesses within the chamber and for them to be educated in the practices and skills needed as they begin to make career choices and develop leadership skills. Typically the organization meets on evening per month with dinner provided, a student-run business meeting to discuss activities, fundraisers or previous post explorations followed by a presentation by a business including what the business does, a “day in the life”, skills/education and a hands-on activity to help them visualize that position and develop collaborative skills.

The October meeting focused on the Advertising and Design industry with a presentation by Howell Creative Group at their offices in New Town. The group met and elected officers as part of their own “business meeting”. They were then given a tour of the firm with owner Kathy Howell and a presentation on what an advertising position involves. The group then participated in an activity centering on creating an advertisement for a real client of the firm by working in teams to create the ad and presenting it to the full group and were critiqued by members of Howell Creative Group.

The nine-month program will include once monthly meetings at the Alliance office, 421 North Boundary St., or at various member businesses in the Williamsburg area to help explore industries such as Advertising, Construction, Restaurant, Technology, Archaeology, Journalism, Retail, Aeronautics, engineering, Marketing and more.

Students will meet on the fourth Monday of the month, October-May, 5:30-8:00 p.m. with dinner sponsored by Jimmy John’s.
