Williamsburg Gymnastics Awarded Grant Supporting the 2011 Virginia Boy's State Gymnastics Championship

May 27, 2011

Williamsburg, VA -- Williamsburg Gymnastics was awarded a sports grant for its pivotal role in securing and hosting the 2011 Virginia Boy's State Gymnastics Meet for the Williamsburg area, the first time this competitive event has been held here in more than a decade. The gymnastics competition, held March 19-20 at William & Mary Hall on the campus of the College of William & Mary, drew more than 350 boys aged 6-18 from across the state. Sports Williamsburg, a committee of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance, funded the award to support the event, which attracted more than 1,000 spectators and generated over 100 room nights in the destination.

Pete Walker, owner and head coach at Williamsburg Gymnastics, applied for the grant as he worked to secure the championship meet for the area.  "Being approved for the grant enabled us to utilize state-of-the-art scoring technology, an upgrade favored by judges for improved ease and accuracy, and one that also enhanced the event experience for the athletes and the audience," said Walker.  "The collaborative efforts and support of Sports Williamsburg are important to attracting championship meets, which require a level of operational quality and overall service that entail significant expenses."

Williamsburg Gymnastics (www.williamsburggymnastics.com) has served the Historic Triangle since 1974 by providing high-quality competitive and recreational gymnastics instruction to boys and girls aged 3-18.  Williamsburg Gymnastics' competitive team members, most of whom are selected from its recreational gymnastics program, develop the skills needed to compete at the local, state, regional and national levels. Williamsburg Gymnastics athletes earned team and individual awards during the 2011 Boys State Gymnastics meet, including the Level 9 first place team trophy.
