History has it that Williamsburg is first designed city in North America.  Royal Governor Francis Nicholson laid out the master street plan in 1699 and located the public buildings and greens, allowing for the two previously existing institutions - Bruton parish Church and the College of William and Mary.
The Historic Area is the nation's largest and most ambitious historic restoration/reconstruction project.  Eighty-five years in the making and still not complete, the Historic Area covers 301 acres and contains 88 restored structures and 400+ reconstructed buildings.
